The Ambassadors

Be the God light in your workplace. For with God, all things are possible. Shine on! by Aretha Tatum

“So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” – 2 Corinthians 5:20 NLT

We often separate our “church” life from our “work” life. We may behave a certain way on Sunday, but Monday through Saturday our “Sunday-self” is pushed away until the next week. I was once guilty of that, until one day I received the revelation that my work is my assignment from God.

We are Christ’s ambassadors in the world. Our job is to be a light wherever God needs us. Many people are tired, hopeless, and helpless, and are looking for a light (help, hope, etc.). We are the light that shines to draw and lead them to Christ.

About ten years ago, I shifted my focus from living year by year to assignment by assignment. I was between jobs and took a temporary assignment as an accountant. While I was there, God used me to encourage the people in the department.

While there, I made connections with coworkers, and one of them found out she had breast cancer. God had me there to pray with and for her. I reminded her that God was with her every step of the way. She was my assignment.

I left that job and began work somewhere else. I realized that accounting would get me the job, and once there, I would let the Lord reveal the person or persons I was to connect with for His divine purpose. My life became an adventure, a journey of a purpose and drive.

I worked a new assignment, and the Lord used me to encourage someone to start an organization He had placed on her heart. I thought it was time for me to move on, but the Lord told me to stay because there was someone else. I had no clue who so I continued to show up every day, and let the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace – manifest from within me.

I put a sign at my desk every day that said Marvelous Monday, Terrific Tuesday, Wonderful Wednesday, Tremendous Thursday, or Fun Friday. I did my best and prayed for wisdom to do the job with excellence.

One day, I returned from lunch to find a card on my desk. It read in part, “I just wanted to say thank you! You have truly been a breath of fresh air. You have re-sparked the fire in my heart. I am so inspired by you and your devotion to the Lord! I have really been trying to listen to what He is telling me and praying boldly.”

Glory to God! People are watching. I continue to bounce around place to place. Accounting gets me in, and then my assignment is revealed. That is my journey.

It doesn’t matter where you work or how long you have been there. Today you can seek the Lord for your purpose and for your assignments right where you are. God is amazing. When someone is in need, He always has an ambassador ready and willing to assist. We are like superheroes empowered by the Holy Spirit strategically placed to be salt and light.

Matthew 5:13 (MSG) summarizes this idea best.

“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be the salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.”

Your mission is, should you choose to accept – Be the God light in your workplace. This mission is not impossible. For with God all things are possible. Shine on!
